Shinnecock Lodge Bead Program
Introduction:
The Shinnecock Totem Recognition Program is designed to function as immediate recognition for participants in both lodge and chapter events and/or activities. It also serves to recognize our brothers for the contributions to our lodge or chapter leadership and other special activities or awards. It also serves as a visible record of each member’s participation and accomplishments while worn on their belt at lodge events.
The Totem:
This program begins with receiving the elements that make up the Shinnecock Totem. The Shinnecock Totem begins with the Ordeal Arrowhead, the Induction Bead a leather cord and belt hanger. Other beads and Arrowheads are added as they are earned.
Arrowhead:
Arrowheads are given out in the following order.
- 1st Arrowhead is white and given when you complete your induction.
- 2nd Arrowhead is white and given when you complete your Brotherhood.
- 3rd Arrowhead is a color of the members choice and is given when you receive the Vigil Honor.
50% Plus Bead:
If you attend 50% or more of all scheduled Lodge and Chapter events you are eligible to receive a Silver Pony Bead.
Add of New Beads:
New beads may be added by the Lodge Executive Committee for any special events or reason as deemed necessary.
Totem Guidelines:
The items listed in this program booklet form the Shinnecock Totem which may be assembled in whatever arrangement suits each brother. This assembly may be decorated in whatever manner each brother desires with the following restrictions:
- Items used in the Totem shall only be those issued by the lodge.
- The decoration cannot be offensive or insulting to any and all.
- The Lodge Key 3 reserves the right to deem any decorated Totem unacceptable to wear.
Bead Backdate:
Any member of the lodge may purchase beads for program attendance based on the availability history of the lodge. A Scout and Scouter are to be considered Trustworthy but items outside the available lodge history are to be reviewed by the lodge treasurer and lodge adviser that oversee the program. The cost for the back years will be $1 for every 2 years of history.
Replacement Totem and Beads:
Totem and beads may be replaced if lost by purchasing them from the lodge store. The cost of the totem is set by the store. All beads are replaced following the $1 for every 2 years of history that is available.
Bead Color Rotation:
Color rotation of beads for Lodge Events are rotated in the following order:
- Years Ending in 1 or 6 are Red.
- Years Ending in 2 or 7 are Yellow.
- Years Ending in 3 or 8 are Black.
- Years Ending in 4 or 9 are White.
- Years Ending in 5 of 0 are Green.

Back Date of Bead Program:
Any member inducted prior to the launch of this program in September of 2023 will receive beads for any positions they held, awards they earned and activities they attended in the years 2021 and 2022. These beads are given at no cost to the member. Any other beads may be purchased under the Bead Backdate program.
