Calling all Scouts and Volunteers!

Suffolk County Scouts are again partnering with Stop & Shop and Island Harvest for our annual Scouting for Food Drive. The kick-off is scheduled for March 21st.

This year our Scouting for Food drive will have three ways to participate:

Neighborhood Bag Collection

Just as we have in the past, our scouts will be distributing grocery bags to our neighbors and asking them to fill the bags with non-perishable donations and leave them by their front door for collection.  Collected food will be brought to an Island Harvest Truck conveniently located in each district.  Bags will be distributed closer to the distribution date.

Stop & Shop Store Front Collection

We will have scouting units in front of thirteen Suffolk County Stop & Shop stores asking shoppers to support our food drive by picking up additional items as they shop. At the end of the collection the unit will drop off collected items to their district’s Island Harvest truck.

Virtual online Food Drive

We will be asking members of our communities to support our Scouting for Food drive by making a donation to Island Harvest. Each dollar donated equals 2 pounds of food. The website allows for various types of donations in various increments.  To donate on line click on this link:  https://www.fooddriveonline.org/islandharvest/sccbsa

Next Steps:

  1. Please have your unit identify a Scouting for Food Drive coordinator and email their contact information along with your units preferred form of participation (Bag Collection, Storefront or Virtual) to Gina Carson at Gina.Carson@Scouting.org.   Note: Store locations are on a first come first serve basis, so please include your preferred Stop & Shop location (see below).

  1. Our Press Conference is scheduled for March 18th at 11:30 am at Stop & Shop on Portion Road in Ronkonkoma. We would like as many Scouts there as possible (Class A).  Unfortunately, this is during school hours, but this is the preferred time for the various news agencies.  If you will be attending the Press Conference, please let  Gina Carson Gina.Carson@Scouting.org  know.

3.    REMEMBER: This is a year long program. Please be sure to report your totals to Gina Carson as you collect during the year.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why did we partner with Island Harvest?

Island Harvest is essentially a food bank to food banks and supports over 400 members.  They are highly efficient and have been serving Long Island for over 25 years.  For more information on Island Harvest visit http://www.islandharvest.org.

What about our local pantry?

When you drop off the food that you collect to the Island Harvest Truck, you can let them know where you would like your donations delivered and they will direct your donations to that center.

Where will my food drop off point be?

We are currently working with Stop and Shop and Island Harvest to identify the best locations in each district to have the Island Harvest truck parked for collection.  We will do our best to make it a central location and as convenient as possible.  The trucks should be available for collection from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

At what stores will we be collection donations?

All 28 Stop & Shop locations will be available as drop-off locations beginning with the kick -off on March 21st.
